Storage phosphor Imaging Systems.

Molecular Dynamics

This company manufactures complete storage phosphor imaging systems. The PhosphorImager® system is reported sensitive to 14C, 3H, 125I, 131I, 32P, 33P, 35S and other radioisotopes. Image plate spatial resolution is reported to cope with closely-spaced bands (as in DNA sequencing els). Exposure times are one-tenth conventional x-ray film. Applications include:The company's Storm product scans storage phosphor screens, fluorescent gels and chemifluorescent blots (image area 35 x 43 cm).
Their FluorImager system is a multi-purpose fluorescent sample reader for one-and two-color analysis of gels, blots, TLC and microplates. Samples are read directly, with no drying or exposure step required. The company issue a number of fluoresence kits and applications guides: Understanding Chemifluorescence Guide; Vistra Fluorescence Reagent Kits for oligonucleotide labelling and Western blotting; 28-page fluorescence imaging applications guide (protein and nucleic acid detection in gels, membranes and microplates). Phoretix software provides a much more powerful and accurate analysis system than the software that is currently supplied with the Molecular Dynamics equipment

Biorad

Bio-Rad (UK)
Tel: 0800 181134

The BioRad GS-505 phosphor plate imager can be used for radioactive and chemiluminescent gels and gel blots. It has a broad linear dynamic range (1 to 105) set against a limited range of wavelengths. It accepts small format (20 x 25cm screens. The high spacial resolution permits separation of closely-spaced bands. Suitable platforms are: Power Macintosh, Macintosh and Windows 3.1/Windows 95.

The Bio-Rad GS-690 is an 10-bit imaging densitometer (24dpi -800dpi) which permits control over resolution and image size. The Bio-Rad scanner is a slightly modified Agfa standard scanner. Preview scans 24dpi can be made rapidly and regions of interest selected with a mouse. A sealed platten permits wet gels to be measured safely. The unit is therefore ideal for 1D and 2D gels, autoradiograms, slot and dot blots and slides or photographs.

The Bio-Rad Gel Doc 1000 system provides a means of imaging and quantitating fluorescently stained including ethidium bromide, SYBR Green I/II and SYPRO Orange. Many of the components are surprisingly similar to those supplied by UVP.

NOTE: Phoretix software provides a much more powerful and accurate analysis system than the software that is currently supplied with the Bio-Rad equipment. Bio-Rad customers would benefit from having Phoretix software.
